Quality Over Quantity — Picking the Right Product For You

CBD is as much a lifestyle choice for many as it is a product.  While this endlessly enthusiastic mindset is incredibly exciting for newcomers, it makes choosing the right first product for them an almost daunting task.  Everyone has their favorite brands or products that they swear by, and they all have their opinions on what is best for those trying to test out the waters.

Not only can the quantity of CBD products available intimidate newbies, but trying to find high-quality CBD products isn’t as easy as sorting by “highest rated” on Amazon. An unfortunate reality of supplements is that they often have labels that aren’t entirely truthful.  Because CBD is classified as a supplement, cursory studies have found that certain companies’ product descriptions don’t quite match up with the product they claim they are delivering. Products may incorrectly list the percentage of CBD in their wares, or might even leave out products from the ingredients list entirely. Whether these inaccuracies are accidental oversites or intentional omissions, it makes product-buying difficult without some sort of screening system.

How can you be sure that the product you’re interested in is the correct one for you?

Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is the answer to any questions you may have regarding the purity or authenticity of your product. It is a report including calculation of the ingredients in a product, and a verification of what a product’s label is telling you. These COAs are produced by third-party laboratories, and work to ensure that companies are producing carefully made and accurately labeled commodities.

Another benefit to a COA is that it can give you measurements of other potential hazards within your products. Hemp is an agricultural product, and runs the risk of being contaminated as it is transformed from plant to product. Because of concerns of these sorts of contaminants, COAs will also include breakdowns of concentrations of pesticides in your product, or heavy metals that may have been present in the soil when the hemp that your product is made from was planted.

Oftentimes COAs can be found on the label of the product, in the form of a QR code.  If you are purchasing a product from an online store and don’t have access to the product’s packaging or otherwise cannot find the information you’re looking for, reach out to the company that makes the product.  If they don’t have a COA available, consider moving on to a product that does have one available. A company not having their products sent out for third-party review doesn’t automatically mean they’re being dishonest about the materials they use, but it does mean that you have no way of knowing what it is that you are actually purchasing. Being careful about checking COAs is the best way you as a consumer have to make sure that you’re getting the product you want.

“Hemp” products vs. “CBD” products

Many marketplaces such as Amazon cannot sell items containing CBD, but a variety of hemp products exist on their storefronts. This can easily confuse someone who is unfamiliar with the difference between hemp and CBD, which we covered in this post.  Some of these companies are very truthful about the difference between hemp and CBD and make sure to elaborate on the fact that their product is specifically a hemp product.  Other companies are rather clever with their marketing and can trick customers looking for CBD products who don’t know any better.

If you aren’t quite sure whether the item you’re looking at is just hemp-based or actually contains CBD, a good idea would be to look at the ingredients list and see if you can find “cannabidiol” or any other sort of cannabinoid.  If you can’t, it’s safe to say it’s probably hemp-based. This is another situation where only buying from companies with readily-available COAs can save you time, money, and a lot of frustration!
