Hemp, CBD, and You: Demystifying This Helpful Compound

There’s no denying that the word “cannabis” has a lot of weight to it. Everyone reacts differently to the idea of the plant, and usually, those reactions are strong. But as the federal relationship with cannabis and hemp changes, thanks to new legislation, more and more people have the opportunity to reexamine the hemp plant and products like CBD oil.

Here at Spectrum Relief, we want our clients in Lake Worth to be empowered with the knowledge they need to make smart purchasing decisions about their CBD oil. So for those new to the world of cannabidiol, let’s take a look at some of the most common misconceptions.

It Takes a Lot of CBD to Feel the Effects

For so many things, the line of thought goes that “more is better,” but this isn’t always the case with CBD. The fact is, everyone is going to react differently to CBD, and you might find that it doesn’t take much at all for you to feel the effects. Conversely, others might need to take more to get the same results. To make this a little more complicated, and to meet your “word of the day” requirements, it’s worth noting that CBD has biphasic properties. That means in most people, taking a little bit of CBD could work to stimulate you, while a lot could actually sedate you.

CBD is Only Useful for Chronic Pain

While this is true, CBD is useful for so much more than that! While those with chronic pain conditions like MS may benefit from the use of CBD, many more people use it for much more mundane things like anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and even skincare. It’s the unique nature of the CBD compound and how it interacts with our body that allows it to be so useful. Our bodies have what’s called an Endocannabinoid System that processes and makes use of the CBD we introduce through products like CBD dried fruits, tinctures, and coffees.

You Need a Doctor’s Prescription to Use CBD

While it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before you start using CBD, CBD is legal for use and possession in all 50 states, without any kind of prescription. This might change according to your local laws, but the truth is that you can order Spectrum Relief products without worry. This misconception stems from the closely related field of medical cannabis which requires you to meet with a doctor before you can purchase medical marijuana.

Hemp Oil and CBD Oil are One and the Same

Well, kinda. While both are oils and both are derived from hemp, that’s where their similarities end. The differences between the two are quite pronounced. Hemp oil is made from hemp seeds. This makes it more like olive oil than CBD oil. That said, hemp oil is an excellent way to get enough fatty acids in your diet, so it’s great for those who follow vegan or vegetarian diets. CBD oil, however, is extracted from the hemp plant using specialized methods. The result is a product that is used for a myriad of reasons beyond simply cooking.

All CBD is the Same

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Just like there are a million different ways to make a cup of coffee, there are a million different ways to grow, cultivate, and process hemp. The result is a wonderfully wide range of products made by a group of talented manufacturers. Here at Spectrum Relief, we’re proud to carry some of the best CBD oils and other products on the market.

Not only that, but the quality of CBD products can vary dramatically between producers. Some cut corners and use low-quality hemp as a base. Others extract their CBD with alcohol, which can make the CBD caustic to consume if it’s inhaled. And still, others mislabel their products with inaccurate concentrations of CBD. Of course, this is more out of ignorance than malice.

CBD Oil is Hard to Find

Cooking With CBD

Since the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill that legalized hemp on a federal level, CBD has exploded in popularity. These days, you can find CBD in coffee, cocktails, sweets, and even dog treats! With an abundance of edible options for CBD, many home cooks have begun infusing their favorite dishes with this potent compound. If you’re looking to join the pack, here are some tips for incorporating CBD into your cooking.

Cooking with CBD Tips

Temperature Matters

When it comes to cooking with CBD, one of the most important factors you will consider is temperature. While warming your CBD oil can increase its efficacy, too high of a temperature can kill certain active components. CBD begins to evaporate at 320 to 356 degrees Fahrenheit, so make sure you’re staying below these temperatures when you’re cooking on the stove. Note that this doesn’t mean you can’t put CBD in the oven at a higher temperature, as the food will not reach as high of an internal temperature.

Avoid overheating CBD by not putting it on direct heat. Overheating can mean losing the terpenes, which will both reduce its effectiveness and bring out a more bitter flavor.

Use a Light Hand

When cooking with CBD, it can be tempting to think that more is better, but that’s not true. Adding too much CBD oil to your recipe will result in a waste of oil, gross flavors, and potentially side effects like nausea. Less is more, especially when you’re first learning to cook with CBD.

You may also benefit from cooking smaller batches initially. This allows you more freedom to experiment without fear of wasting your CBD product. This will also give you the opportunity to figure out different dosages so you can make the most out of future dishes.

Use Fat

Cannabinoids bind well with fat, which means that your CBD needs an oil in order to provide the level of bio-availability you need to have an effect. Fortunately, our CBD tinctures are made with hemp seed oil, so they naturally provide a fat that can be used in cooking. You may also consider making a CBD butter or ghee for baking.

Try Sweet or Savory

CBD is often used in baked goods because it’s a lot easier to cover up the bitterness of the hemp with sugar or chocolate. However, CBD also makes a great addition to savory dishes if you use it strategically. For example, adding a teaspoon of CBD into your guacamole is a tasty way to get the benefits of CBD in a dish that can handle the inherent bitterness. CBD also makes a simple and delicious addition to salad dressing, soups, and sauces.

Stir Often

Whether you’re making peanut butter cookies or butternut squash soup, stirring is a crucial step to cooking with CBD. This is the key to ensuring that the compound is evenly distributed throughout the batch so every bite is equally potent. Stir often, even more than you really think is necessary.

Drizzle If You Need

In order to achieve the best flavor and most effective method of dosing, it’s recommended that you mix your CBD oil directly into your ingredients. However, if you don’t have the time, it’s also perfectly acceptable to drizzle your CBD oil directly onto whatever you’re eating. While the flavor will be affected, it can still offer the same effects.
