The Effects of CBD on Dogs

There is currently no formal research on specifically CBD for dogs. Some studies on the impact of cannabis on dogs, in general, suggest that cannabinoids have a similar effect on canines as humans. Dogs also have endocannabinoid receptors in their nervous systems, which play a role in maintaining the balance of the body. This supports the idea that dogs can benefit from CBD in the same ways humans do.

What Dog Health Issues are Treated by CBD?

Despite a lack of formal data on this topic, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence from pet owners that suggest that CBD can be effective for managing a variety of health conditions. In particular, CBD seems to be effective for treating neuropathic pain, as well as controlling seizures in dogs with epilepsy.

This is likely due to the established anti-inflammatory effect of CBD. CBD may also help fight anxiety, stimulate appetite, combat nausea, and may even have some cancer-fighting properties, though more research must be done to establish these benefits for certain. There is currently a study being conducted by the Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Services into the use of CBD on epileptic dogs, and we can anticipate that more studies of its kind will come down the road.

Side Effects of CBD on Dogs

Given what we know about the effects of CBD on humans, it’s possible for your dog to experience the following symptoms from CBD:

  • Dry mouth: CBD may reduce saliva production, so taking CBD may make your dog thirstier.
  • Lowered blood pressure: CBD may cause blood pressure to lower temporarily at high doses. This can cause light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness: CBD has a calming effect, which in some animals, may lead to drowsiness, particularly with higher doses.

Could My Dog Benefit from CBD?

Ultimately, it’s best to talk to your vet about whether or not your pup could benefit from adding CBD into their diet. However, you might decide to bring it up at their next appointment for a few reasons. If your dog has seizures, CBD may be helpful in reducing their frequency. If your older dog has chronic pain, such as from certain joint disorders like arthritis, CBD may help them reduce inflammation and move around a little easier. In addition, if your canine companion has an anxious nature, CBD may be what they need to relax. Finally, dogs with certain serious health conditions, such as cancer, could better manage their symptoms with the aid of CBD.

Shopping for CBD for Your Dog

If you and your veterinarian have determined that your pooch would benefit from adding CBD into their diet, it’s important to keep some things in mind when you’re shopping for CBD oil for dogs.

  • Go organic. Not all CBD products are created equal, so make sure to look for quality and shop organic. At Vapor DOCS, our whole wheat CBD dog treats are organic
  • Know what’s in it. CBD is not currently well-regulated, and that is certainly true of CBD pet products. Make a point to only purchase products that are completely transparent about their ingredients. In particular, you want to know exactly how much CBD is in the product. Some may only have small amounts of CBD, and some contain too much THC (trace amounts are okay), so many sure you know what is in your dog’s CBD before giving it to them.
  • Choose what’s best for your dog. Ultimately, you know what your dog will respond best to, and there are pros and cons to both CBD dog treats and CBD oil for dogs. Depending on what dose you want to give them, treats may not cut it. For example, our treats have 2mg of CBD in each, and if you and your vet have agreed on 10mgs a day, you may not want to give your dog that many treats. Alternatively, if your dog is a picky eater and is likely to turn its nose up at anything laced with CBD oil, a treat may be what you need. Make this decision based on what you know about your dog.

CBD — A Quick Primer

Why CBD?

CBD is an incredibly versatile substance and can be consumed in a variety of different forms.  Whether infused in coffee or tea, massaged into the skin via lotions and salves, or even inhaled, CBD is the product of choice for many to help ease what ails them. While it isn’t a magical cure-all, recent studies have shown that it can at the very least have significant pain relieving properties.  Because many CBD users attribute an increase in mental wellbeing to their usage of CBD products, people are starting to flock to CBD-based remedies for themselves, their loved ones, and even their pets!

CBD vs. THC

Early in the 21st century, CBD and THC were pushed to the forefront of a national debate on the re-legalization of recreational marijuana. Although proponents for and against this push were very firmly entrenched in their positions, not many had more than a surface-level knowledge of marijuana vs. hemp, or the differences between CBD and THC. Because there still seem to be a number of questions and common misconceptions about hemp and marijuana in general, we wanted to take a second to clear the air regarding CBD.

What are CBD & THC?

CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are two of over one hundred different cannabinoids found within cannabis. Hemp refers to strains of the Cannabis sativa plant that consist of very low THC content; whereas, marijuana refers to cannabis plants that are above a certain threshold of THC percentage. TCH is responsible for inducing the psychoactive effects commonly seen in marijuana when ingested or smoked.

Hemp is an incredibly fascinating subset of the cannabis plant, because it can form the basis for a whole host of products. The CBD-based oils or lotions we all know and love are just scratching the surface. Marijuana, on the other hand, is typically only created with recreational or medical consumption in mind.

Legality

Cannabis has sat in an odd sort of legal limbo since conversations on legalization took place, prompting Colorado and Washington to lead the charge to re-legalize recreational marijuana usage in 2012. Hemp, however, has found itself much more widely accepted than its psychoactive cousin. Legalization permitting the industrial growing of hemp for commercial products such as CBD oil was formally passed at a federal level last year, after the “Farm Bill” of 2014 legislation allowed industrial hemp to be used in a research capacity. Alongside a Congressional ruling from earlier this year protecting the autonomy of states to dictate their own laws regarding hemp and marijuana, cannabis as an up-and-coming industry seems to be here to stay.

What Can’t CBD do?

CBD can’t replace long-term medication.  While initial research into CBD’s medicinal properties is incredibly positive—so positive, in fact, that an experimental drug known as Epidiolex has been developed for young children suffering from seizures—there’s still a long way to go before a strict determination on CBD’s full medicinal capacity is made. Like other analgesic lotions and salves, CBD-based products can be an amazing addition to pre-existing healthcare strategies, but shouldn’t be relied on as an independent cure-all.

CBD’s variety of uses make cannabis a plant that has an incredibly bright future ahead of it. Its potential for usage in everything from paper and clothing to the tinctures, lotions and CBD-infused snacks enthusiasts all know and love practically promise long-term success for CBD, which is excellent news for all of us!  It also makes now a perfect time to dive stop into Spectrum Relief’s Lake Worth or Deerfield Beach locations to learn more about these products from some of the most knowledgeable specialists around!
